In each of these 53 areas, the Black share of populations in Black-resident neighborhoods declined since In more than half, the white population share in Black-resident neighborhoods also declined. This means that Latinos or Hispanics, Asians Americans, and persons of two or more races are responsible the increased diversity in Black-resident neighborhoods.

Yet even as diversity increases in Black-resident neighborhoods, the Black shares of their populations are larger—generally much larger—than Black shares of the metropolitan population. This is illustrated for selected metropolitan areas in Figure 3. The biggest disparities in Black representation between Black-resident neighborhoods and their metropolitan areas tend to be in older metro areas with stagnating Black populations, including Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia.

Smaller, though still large, disparities are evident in areas with recently rapid-growing Black populations such as Houston, Atlanta, and Charlotte, N. The Latino or Hispanic share of the population increased in most metropolitan areas since , and in most Latino or Hispanic-resident neighborhoods.

And in those neighborhoods, the rise in the Latino or Hispanic share of the population is mostly accompanied by a decline in the white share of the population. Download Table C. Nonetheless, the average Latino or Hispanic-resident neighborhood typically houses a greater share of Latino or Hispanics than the larger metropolitan area.

This is illustrated for selected metro areas in Figure 4. Another way to look at neighborhood segregation is with a segregation index, sometimes known as a dissimilarity index. This index measures the extent to which two different groups, such white and Black populations, are unequally distributed across neighborhoods in a single metropolitan area. The index can range from 0 complete integration to complete segregation , where its value represents the percent of one group e.

Interactive map 1 displays these patterns for Black-white segregation among metropolitan areas in to 2. The segregation values range from 41 in Las Vegas to 79 in Milwaukee. In the s, segregation levels were higher everywhere due to well-documented discriminatory practices by lenders, realtors, and government agencies. The Fair Housing Act outlawed many of those practices, but had its biggest impact in the South, where large waves of Black Americans began to move. They have sorted census tracts in 15 of America’s 20 biggest cities into “racially concentrated areas of affluence” and “racially concentrated areas of poverty,” and find that many cities have more areas of segregated affluence than they do poverty.

Racially concentrated areas of affluence, by the researchers’ definition, are census tracts where 90 percent or more of the population is white and the median income is at least four times the federal poverty level, adjusted for the cost of living in each city. Racially concentrated areas of poverty, by contrast, are census tracts where more than 50 percent of the population is non-white, and more than 40 percent live in poverty.

Detroit has 55 racially concentrated areas of affluence and racially concentrated areas of poverty, according to the research, done by Ed Goetz, Tony Damiano, and Jason Hicks. In order to determine the whitest states in America, we looked to the ultimate source of data — the US Census. The American Community Survey provides the most recent data on the breakdown of race by state. We then ranked the states from most white to least white.

Maine comes out on top as the whitest state in the country. You can download the data here. Here in america, there is this pattern of migration that determines where people move. In many of these places we just talked about, traditionally, there were no jobs, and there was no heritage, or culture to attract people of color to come to these states to settle.

It will be interesting over time is to see if those migration patterns change. Who knows. But for now, the white people in Maine, New Hamshire, Vermont, and all the other states we talked about will continue to do their white things in their little white bubble worlds.

Beginning in the Northeast at Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, cutting through upstate New York, much of Pennsylvania, and down through the parts of Virginia and the Carolinas west of the Appalachians, white America spreads westward across Kentucky, much of Ohio, huge pieces of the Upper Midwest, nearly the entire Great Plains, and all of the mountain states of Utah, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho, with the exception of diversified cities such as Denver.

The still mostly unpopulated eastern sections of Washington and Oregon, along with very northern California, are still primarily white. Methamphetamines and opioids are epidemic among the white working and middle classes in these areas, so the presence of drugs and people willing to steal and rob to pay for them are safety concerns.

However, personal property rights and gun rights are strong in much of white America, so law-abiding citizens have plenty of means at their disposal to protect themselves, or even aid local law enforcement in the fight to reclaim their communities. Some wannabe gangsta rappers may be an annoying presence, but in many cases their white upbringing and tendencies mitigate the actual harms these little Eminems inflict on their communities. This varies greatly depending on the local economy and the regulatory and taxation regime of the several states.

In places like western Massachusetts or eastern Washington, the overwhelmingly white and peaceful population has to contend with onerous burdens from their state capitals, dominated by socialists, feminists, and non-whites from the big cities.

However, in states dominated by small-government conservatives such as Utah and Wyoming, local governmental bodies may actually be bigger regulators than the state. In either case, the growth or contraction of the main local industries is a primary consideration, especially if your business consists in selling to or serving local customers.

In growing communities, your business can thrive. That is a plus. However, people are still people. That is true for all of white America except those parts which have so many transplants, such as Boise and Charlotte, that it is easy to be a newcomer and still fare well. Whether you move abroad or move within the United States, there are advantages to picking a good spot of soil on which to live, work, and play.
